Kelly’s Special Day story

Thirty-nine year old Kelly, a Renal Specialist Nurse, has referred patients to Willow who have had a diagnosis of kidney failure and has witnessed first hand the joy a Special Day can create. She never expected to be applying for a Special Day for herself.

Just days after returning from a magical family holiday, I was given the devastating news that I had grade three breast cancer. They say life can change in the blink of an eye… it certainly did.  In my job I support patients through serious illness, and suddenly I found myself on the other side, being the patient.

Telling my son I had cancer was the hardest thing I have ever had to do, and I will never forget the look on his face. I made him a promise that nothing would change. And that is what has kept me strong, kept me fighting and determined to beat this.

This was our chance to recharge our batteries and feel like a normal family again – just like we did before my diagnosis.

Our Willow Special Day was all part of that. I wanted to plan an experience that allowed me to give my husband and son some much needed family time together, away from hospital appointments and chemotherapy sessions. This was our chance to recharge our batteries and feel like a normal family again – just like we did before my diagnosis.

Willow arranged a long weekend in Center Parcs. It came mid way through my chemotherapy sessions. We had a fantastic time together as a family. I felt totally refreshed and it gave me that much needed boost to face my last few rounds of chemotherapy.

Thank you for your kindness, from the bottom of my heart.
