Laurel‘s Special Day story
When Laurel was diagnosed with Leukaemia, her life completely changed but she was determined to get her life back on track. With the help of Willow organising a trip to Edinburgh and the support from those closest to her, Laurel was able to move on and celebrate the end of a tough year.
After I graduated from university, I got a job as an interior designer and I was constantly busy, both socially and with work. But after I was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2014, my health deteriorated rapidly. My treatment was 5 months in total. At this point, my life changed, but not forever. It was my social worker who told me about Willow. Applying to Willow gave me the opportunity to show the people who supported me throughout my treatment how important they are to me.
These memories will always have a lasting impact on me. I don’t relate them to my illness or my treatment in any way. I had such a great time.

Having my Special Day gave me the chance to get back to normal. I was back to good health at the time and most importantly, I felt like my old self again. I regained my independence.
Thank you so much for organising such a fantastic weekend for us in Edinburgh. It is a beautiful city and we had so much fun – I don’t think we’ve ever laughed so much. My friends and I are desperate to go back and we’re already planning another trip.
We’ve made some fantastic memories from our trip. Even now we look back and laugh. These memories will always have a lasting impact on me. I don’t relate them to my illness or my treatment in any way. I had such a great time.
We were incredibly lucky not only to have a Special Day but a truly special weekend. It was the best way to celebrate the end of the year and the end of my treatment.
