Jan’s Willow-inspired garden wins top award at BBC Gardeners’ World Live

Former Willow beneficiary Jan O’Brien from Bolton created a beautiful garden inspired by Willow for this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live.

The garden, Willow Moments and Memories, was on display at the NEC in Birmingham and received a silver merit, as well as the award for Best Interpretation of Theme – Beautiful Borders.

Jan had a Special Day in 2006 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Her day involved an afternoon tea at The Dorchester, a trip to see The Sound of Music, and the chance to meet the star of the show, Connie Fisher.

Since then, Jan has supported Willow by volunteering, giving talks and hosting fundraising events.

Her garden design was based on the feelings and memories from her own Special Day. It featured a ‘river of memories’ made from everlasting flowers, leading to a willow tree as a place to pause and reflect. Stepping stones across the garden showed words like hope, uplifted and grateful. Another area shared quotes and photos from other Willow beneficiaries, showing the memories created through their own experiences.

Jan said:

“I’m so pleased to have had the opportunity to share the work of Willow through this very special garden. As a Willow beneficiary, I know only too well the lasting impact of a Special Day and the precious memories that come with it. To have received an award for my work was the icing on the cake. It was very surreal and I can’t quite believe it.”

Willow CEO Jonathan Aves said:

“Jan’s garden shows just how powerful a Special Day can be for young adults and their loved ones. On behalf of everyone at Willow, I’d like to thank Jan for her support and say a big congratulations on this amazing achievement.”

If you’ve got green fingers like Jan, why not add a Willow rose to your garden? £2.50 from each sale will be donated to help deliver more special experiences for seriously ill young adults.
